PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Justin Wengell (Newington, Conn.) scored the only goal of the game early in the first half, and Plymouth State College
went on to post a 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University Saturday in a Little East Conference men’s soccer match at Panther Field.
The outcome marks PSC’s fourth 1-0 victory in the last five outings, as the Panthers improve to 6-4-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the LEC. Western Conn had a
three-game winning streak stopped, dropping the Colonials to 7-5-3 overall and 1-3-0 in the conference.
WCSU finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots on goal, but PSC senior goalkeeper Scott Laine (Spencer, Mass.) made five saves to record his fourth
shutout of the season and ninth of his career. Sophomore keeper Mark Pataky (Trumbull, Conn.) made two saves for Western.
Wengell’s goal was set up off a corner kick at the 9:24 mark by senior Garry Thomson (Glasgow, Scotland), who registered his team-leading fourth
assist of the season.
Plymouth State hosts a pair of LEC matches next week – Southern Maine on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and Rhode Island College next Saturday at 1:00
p.m. Western Connecticut plays at RIC on Tuesday.
