SALEM, Mass. – Senior attackman Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.) scored five goals and senior attackman J.P. Sallese (Beverly, Mass.) added two scores and six assists to lead the Plymouth State College men’s lacrosse team to a 15-6 Little East Conference victory over Salem State Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The victory was PSC’s first of the season as the Panthers improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the first year of LEC men’s lacrosse. Salem State drops to 1-3 both overall and in conference play.
The Vikings stayed with the Panthers throught the first period as the game was deadlocked at 4-4 through the first 15 minutes. PSC made it 6-4 by halftime and outscored Salem State 9-2 in the second half to run away with the win.
Martocchio has scored 14 goals in the Panthers’ first three matches this season. Sallese tallied a season-high six assists playing near his hometown of Beverly. Sophomore Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) added two goals and an assist, and sophomore Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists.
Also getting into the scoring act with singles goals for PSC were junior Andrew Quesnel (Middlebury, Vt.), sophomore Kevin Finnerty (Bay Shore, N.Y.), and freshmen Eric Gobeil (Chelmsford, Mass.), Jake Frerk (Beverly, Mass.) and John Gross (Loudonville, N.Y.).
PSC junior goaltender Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine) finished the match with 15 saves, while Salem junior netminder Tim Finn stopped nine Panther shots. Sophomore Erik Stanton led the Viking offense with two goals.
PSC’s scheduled Thursday home game against Lasell has been postponed to Sunday, April 29th at 1 p.m. The Panthers’ game against Keene State, originally slated for Saturday at Panther Field, has been moved and will be played Saturday on the turf at Keene (7:00 p.m.).
