PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Plymouth State University senior Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) and Rhode Island College freshman Heidi Eichler (Madison, Conn.) each tossed shutouts Friday afternoon as the Panthers and Anchorwomen split a Little East Conference softball doubleheader at Dayna A. Bazar Memorial Field.
Eichler threw a three-hit shutout for a 3-0 victory in the opener for LEC-leading RIC, striking out six and improving her record to 10-7. Senior Amy Machado (Newport, R.I.) delivered the big blow of the game for the Anchorwomen, blasting a three-run homerun over the left center field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning. The homerun was her second of the season. PSU junior Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) took a shutout into the sixth inning but suffered the loss.
Jeffs allowed only four hits in the nightcap for her second straight shutout, a 2-0 decision, while striking out eight. She now has five shutouts this season and 37 in her career, which is tied for 10th on the all-time Division III list. Jeffs also singled to start PSU’s two-run rally in the fourth inning. One out later, freshman Devin Caswell (Wilton, N.H.) singled to put two runners on, and then with two outs, freshman Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I.) delivered a two-run double.
With the outcome, PSU (12-16 overall, 4-8 LEC) has moved into a tie with UMass Dartmouth for the sixth and final spot in next week’s LEC Tournament. The Panthers are scheduled to conclude the regular season Saturday with an LEC twinbill at UMass Boston (2:30 p.m.). RIC (21-13 overall, 10-2 LEC) hosts second place Eastern Connecticut (12-20 overall, 7-3 LEC) in its regular season finale on Saturday (1:00 p.m.)
