LEWISTON, Maine – Plymouth State College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Bates College Thursday afternoon, 4-0 and 2-1, at a frigid Lafayette Street Field.
The non-conference victories improve PSC’s record to 17-4, while the Bobcats fall to 3-11.
The Panthers took control of the first game one in the top of the second when Michelle Knox (Gilmanton, N.H.) walked with the bases load and was followed by an RBI single through the left side by senior Adriene Harvey (Nantucket, Mass.). More insurance came in the fourth inning when Harvey roped her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to put the Panthers up 4-0.
Sophomore pitcher Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) mowed down Bobcat hitters to the tune of 10 strikeouts. She went the distance to register her seventh shutout and up her record to 14-3, scattering three hits. Ginger Walsh (New London, N.H.) picked up the hard luck loss, her fourth in five decisions, after scattering five hits and striking out six.
Bates threatened in the sixth inning when Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) blooped a two-out double to right center. Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) then reached first on an infield error, but Jeffs fanned the next batter to end the rally.
In game two, Plymouth State wasted little time getting on the board. Junior Maria Curran (Scarborough, Maine) led off the game with a double to left center, went to third on a sac bunt, and scored on a solid hit by Knox. The Panthers used similar tactics in plating another run in the third inning when Cooley led off with a base hit, advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a base hit by Harvey, and came home on an infield out by Annie Metz (North Chelmsford, Mass.).
Bates would answer in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run off Panther starter Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.). Jeffs came on in relief of Eaton and kept Bates at bay the rest of the way.
PSC returns to Little East Conference action Saturday with a key 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Rhode Island College.
