WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Plymouth State College’s skiing teams continued their strong seasons over the weekend, sweeping the men’s and women’s slalom and giant slalom races at the PSC Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley.
Both Panther teams placed first in Saturday’s slalom and came back with victories in Sunday’s GS. Both squads are a perfect 4-for-4 in ski races this season. The women’s team edged out runner-up Boston College on both days, while the men finished ahead of second-place BC on Saturday and runner-up Colby-Sawyer on Sunday.
Senior Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania) continued to ski well for the Panther women, winning the slalom and placing fourth in the GS. She has captured 24 races in her 32 collegiate starts. She got strong support in the team victories from sophomore Cher Murphy (East Northport, NY), who placed third in the slalom and fourth in the GS, and freshman Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.), who was 11th in the slalom and seventh in the GS.
Other Panther women with solid finishes included senior Tara Eretzian (Turner, Maine), 20th in the slalom and 25th in the GS, and sophomore Janine Iannillo (Monroe, N.Y.), 27th and 18th, respectively.
The PSC men’s squad continued to use a balanced line-up for the victory. Junior Tim Mitchell (Ashland, Mass.) was the winner of the slalom race and placed third in the GS. Senior Fred DeBaets (St. Sauveur, QUE) was the team’s top finishers in the GS, finishing runner-up.
