PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Eastern Connecticut State University, the top-ranked Division III baseball team in New England, scored three runs in the ninth inning of the nightcap Saturday to pull out a 10-7 victory over Plymouth State College and earn a sweep of the Little East Conference doubleheader at Panther Park.
The Warriors, who won the opener 11-1, improve to 17-3-1 overall and 4-0 in Little East games, while PSC drops to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the LEC.
Eastern scored five runs in the second inning of the opener off PSC starter Nate Provencher (Wilton, N.H.), who took the loss to drop to 1-2. The Panthers got their only run in the bottom of the second of a solo home run by junior Robbie Burr (Concord, N.H.), his third of the season.
Senior Nick Scheets (Milford, Conn.) led the offensive barrage by the Warriors with four hits in the first game, while sophomore Dwight Wildman (Seymour, Conn.) added three hits, including a double and his second home run of the season. Junior Matt Fortin (Tolland, Conn.) worked eight innings on the mound to pick up the win (4-1) for ECSU.
Trailing 5-0 in the nightcap, PSC came back with four runs in the third inning and single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-6 lead. ECSU responded with the tying run in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth to put the game away.
Junior Matt Price (Epping, N.H.), senior Jon Albertini (Franklin, Mass.), freshman Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) and Burr had two hits apiece for PSC in the nightcap. Junior Scott Hodsdon (Somersworth, N.H.) added a two-run double, and classmate Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) cracked his fourth home run of the season.
Senior John Hedde (Stonington, Conn.) led Eastern in the nightcap with three hits and three RBI. Senior John Kubachka (Glastonbury, Conn.), who leads the league in hitting, added a pair of doubles.
The Panthers get back into action Sunday with a non-conference twinbill at Rivier College (12:00 p.m.). ECSU returns home to host Western Connecticut Sunday in an LEC contest (1 p.m.).
