PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State College football team travels to Wayne, N.J. this weekend for its second game of the season, a non-conference encounter at William Paterson University.
The Panthers and Pioneers will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at WPU’s Wightman Field. Plymouth State is also looking for its first win of the season, having dropped its opening game at UMass Dartmouth last Friday night, 44-14. The Panthers committed seven turnovers and never recovered from a 17-0 deficit early in the first quarter.
A member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, William Paterson is coming off a 55-18 loss at Salisbury (Md.) in its opening game of the season last Saturday. The Pioneers finished with a 3-7 overall record last season.
This will be only the third game ever for PSC against a school from New Jersey. The Panthers defeated Kean University in 1998 (27-12) and 1999 (40-0) in the only others.
The Panther offense ran up 303 yards in the loss at UMass Dartmouth. Senior Chris Holton (Bellows Falls, Vt.) caught eight passes for 101 yards and one touchdown, earning a spot on the Freedom Football Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Seniors Jason Bordas (Elmore, Vt.) and Mike Bicchieri (Londonderry, N.H.) each produced more than 120 all-purpose yards, as Bordas rushed for 84 yards and caught a 40-yard pass and Bicchieri rushed for 33 and returned five kick-offs for 92 yards.
After two non-conference road games to open the season, Plymouth State makes its 2002 Currier Field debut next Saturday (Sept. 28) in the Freedom Conference opener against Norwich University. The Panthers are defending co-champions and are seeking their record fourth FFC title.
