WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.) scored a goal four minutes into overtime Tuesday, giving Plymouth State College a 3-2
victory over Westfield State College in a Little East Conference field hockey match-up.
Matteson carried the ball left to right across the field and scored from 10 yards out. It was her first career goal in 19 career outings.
Plymouth State came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to earn the big road victory. PSC moves to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the Little East, with a pair of conference
overtime triumphs in the last four days. Westfield State is now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
The first four goals of the game were all scored in the first half. Mary Bishop gave Westfield a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest, but PSC answered a minute
later when Sacha Jackson (Sangerville, Maine) notched her team-leading third goal of the season, with an assist from Megan Fournier (East Waterboro, Maine). Nikki
Girolamo put the Owls back in front midway through the half, but again PSC answered, this time Fournier getting the goal, her first of the season.
PSC goalie Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) turned away nine shots to pick up the victory, while Westfield goalie Jill Annunciata made 12 saves.
The Panthers are back in action this Thursday, Sept. 21st, at Trinity College (4 p.m.). Then PSC returns home to host arch-rival Keene State Saturday, Sept. 23rd, at
Arold Field at 1 p.m.
