MEDFORD, Mass. — Sophomore guard Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) scored 34 points, including 19 in the second half, as the visiting Plymouth State Panthers held off the Tufts University Jumbos for a 95-87 road victory in men’s basketball action at Cousens Gym on Monday night.
Plymouth never trailed in the game, but they did surrender a 24-point first-half lead before recovering for the victory. The Panthers, who have played four road games in seven days, going 3-1 in that span, improved to 6-1 overall. Tufts lost for the fifth time in six games and fell to 2-5 overall.
The Panthers quickly opened a 15-3 lead barely four minutes into the game with freshman Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, MA) scoring their first 10 points. They maintained a healthy margin over the next five minutes, then added to it with a 24-9 stretch that gave them a 51-27 lead following a layup by Pelotte with 2:52 to go in the first half. The Panthers led by 18, 55-37, at the half, with Pelotte’s 15 leading the way. Senior co-captain Jim Wilson (Rockland, Maine) and sophomore forward Reggie Stovell (Washington, D.C.) had eight points at the break for the Jumbos.
Tufts chipped away at the deficit early in the second half, then exploded for 15 straight points to tie the score at 63-63 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Andrew Kaklamanos (Jupiter, Fla.) at 12:08. Senior guard Mike McGlynn (Medford, Mass.) had eight points during the 15-0 run, including two three-pointers.
A Pelotte jumper at 10:59 gave the visitors their lead back, 65-63, and they did not lose it again. A three-pointer by sophomore J.J. Truman (Enfield, N.H.) pushed the margin to 75-68 at 6:32, and a layup by junior center Ryan Chicoine (Gorham, Maine) put Plymouth up 81-71 at 5:18. The Jumbos cut it to five, 81-76, on a McGlynn three-pointer and a layup by Wilson at 5:01, but that’s as close as they would get. Pelotte had 16 points down the stretch after Tufts tied the game.
Plymouth shot 50.7 percent (38/75) from the floor, with sophomore Anthony Oglesby (Brooklyn, N.Y.) adding 20 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers. Senior Kenny Stewart (Londonderry, N.H.) had seven assists.
Sophomore center Craig Coupe (Niskayuna, NY) led the Jumbos with 22 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, while McGlynn finished with 20 points including five threes and had five assists. Stovell added 12 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes.
PSC returns home to host Eastern Connecticut Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in a key Little East Conference affair, just the second contest at Foley Gymnasium this season.
