Three Games, One Day, Under One Roof! Mark your calendars because Division I, Division II, and Division III Men’s Basketball teams from colleges across the state are coming together for the first time ever! New Hampshire Hoops Classic will be at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday, December 14th with games at 1:00pm, 3:30pm and 6:00pm.
At 1:00pm the Keene State Owls will face off against the Plymouth State Panthers in this Division III match up. Last season the Owls made it into the ECAC Tournament with at 22-8 record, where they played for the title for the fifth time in six years. Head Coach Rob Colbert commented on the event saying, “This is a unique experience for our kids to play in a large arena in a central location where alumni, friends, and family can come watch us play. And to be playing our arch rival is a very special occasion.” The Plymouth Panthers, led by Head Coach John Scheinman, were ranked second seed for the 2002-2003 ECAC Division III New England Tournament and ended the season with a 21-8 record. Looking forward to the event, Coach Scheinman states, “It’s a super day for New Hampshire basketball. It’s a great opportunity for people around the state to see three quality games for one admission. For the Division III game, it’s an opportunity for people to see the quality of Division III basketball.”
The second game showcases the talents of the Division II teams from Saint Anselm and Southern New Hampshire University. A 3:30pm tip-off is scheduled. The SNHU Penmen, led by Head Coach Stan Spirou, were second in their Division II conference last season with a 17-5 record and a .773 wining percentage. When asked to comment on the upcoming event, Head Coach Spirou said, “Having six teams from the same state under on roof should be a unique and special experience for players, coaches, and fans. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be coaching at a place that is less than 300 yards from where I grew up. For me it’s going back to my roots.” The Saint Anselm Hawks, led by Head Coach Keith Dickson, concluded the 2002-2003 season with a 13-14 record and are known for their successful comebacks.
The last match up of the night will begin at 6:00pm between the Division I Dartmouth Big Green and the UNH Wildcats. When asked about playing for the event, the Big Green’s Head Coach Dave Faucher remarked, “Dartmouth basketball is both thrilled and honored to be participating in the New Hampshire Hoops Classic at the Verizon Wireless Arena. We think it’s a super venue in which to showcase our program and our players are excited to have the opportunity to take the great Dartmouth-UNH rivalry to the biggest venue in the state.” Dartmouth is headed into the season with a team combined of veteran juniors and sophomores, and talented new freshman. Phil Rowe, head coach for the Wildcats comments, “This is an event that I have long hoped would happen and am very excited that the three levels of basketball that represent the state will all be at one arena and the fans of our great state will be able to see everyone together.”
