WENHAM, Mass. – Plymouth State University junior Keith Whittemore (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth) tallied an unassisted goal with just 2:35 remaining in regulation Wednesday afternoon and the Panthers and Gordon College went on to a 1-1, double overtime draw on the Quad on Gordon’s campus.
The Fighting Scots controlled the tempo in the first half, pushing the ball deep into the Panthers’ zone and tallying 10 shots, six on goal. Midway through the opening frame, junior Matt Schneider (Allentown, Pa.) found the back of the net on a feed from senior Dave Smith (Salem, N.H.) to put Gordon on the board. The home team continued to apply the pressure but could not score again as PSU sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) turned away five shots in the first half to keep the score at 1-0.
The second half was just the opposite with Plymouth State controlling much of the tempo and keeping the ball in their offensive zone for the better part of the half. It seemed as though the Panthers would not score despite taking 11 shots in the half. However, Whittemore shocked the home team with the late goal to tie up the game. The Fighting Scots pressed in the last 15 seconds and earned a corner kick but could not score as the teams headed to overtime.
The play was fairly matched in the first overtime as neither team could score despite three shots apiece. The visitors nearly scored in the second overtime but Fighting Scots goalkeeper Brian Schilling (Goffstown, N.H.) stopped a point-blank shot to preserve the tie.
Schilling made a total of five saves in the contest while Shute turned away seven shots for the Panthers.
Gordon, 0-0-1, opens the Commonwealth Coast Conference season this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Eastern Nazarene College. PSU, 0-0-1, returns home to play five straight home games, beginning Saturday at Panther Field against Salem State (5:00 p.m.)
