NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University and Plymouth State University women’s soccer teams battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Wednesday afternoon at Howard Field.
After a scoreless first half, Norwich junior Amanda Connory (Groveton, N.H.) scored in the 56th minute with an assist from Carrie Adams to put the Cadets on top 1-0. Plymouth State came right back and tied the score nearly six minutes later on a goal by junior Ashley Dassatti (Hampstead, N.H.), her first of the season and assisted by sophomore Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, Mass.). PSU pressed the Cadets during both overtime periods but could not score the game winner. A great point blank save by Norwich senior goalkeeper Megan Fleshman (Troy, N.Y.) secured the tie.
The Panthers outshot the Cadets on the day, 20-14. Fleshman recorded nine saves, while PSU senior netminder Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) saved six shots.
The contest was of significance for PSU’s first-year head coach Gene Smith, a 1998 graduate of Norwich and an assistant coach for the Cadet women last season.
The Cadets improved to 0-1-2 on the season and will play at Emerson College on Saturday at 12:99 p.m. The Panthers are now 0-2-1 and will host St. Joseph’s (Maine) on Saturday in the home opener at Panther Field (4:00 p.m.)
