WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Freshman goaltender Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) stopped 35 shots Saturday evening as the Plymouth State University men’s ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Salve Regina University in an ECAC Northeast Conference game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The teams combined for three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game, and all four goals were scored in the first 35 minutes of the 65-minute affair. Helgesson made 11 saves in both the second and third periods and six more in overtime as he improved his saves percentage to .921 and his goals against average to 2.81.
PSU got on the board first when freshman Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) tallied a power play goal at 1:55 of the first period, with assists from juniors Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) and Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.).
Salve tied it up at the 9:06 mark of the first on a goal by junior Joe Piekos (Medford, Mass.), with assists from senior Geno Binda (South Boston, Mass.) and junior Lachlan Burgess (Hanson, Mass.). The Panthers regained the lead a minute and a half later as sophomore Steve Milley (Sudbury, Mass.) tallied his first career goal from sophomore Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.).
The visitors tied things up again with five minutes left in the second period when senior Chris Holt (South Boston, Mass.) scored from classmate Adam Asselin (Auburn, Maine) and sophomore Travis Hampton (Billings, Mont.).
That turned out to be all the scoring in the game. The Seahawks had a couple of excellent chances in the overtime period, but couldn’t finish off the Panthers.
Salve Regina had a 37-24 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalie Mike O’Brien (Beverly, Mass.) made 22 saves for the Seahawks.
Plymouth State, 2-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference, plays a non-conference game Wednesday at Trinity College (7:30 p.m.). Salve, 3-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Northeast, hosts Suffolk Wednesday in a conference match-up.
