PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University and Western Connecticut State University battled to a 0-0 tie Saturday afternoon in a key Little East Conference women’s soccer contest at Panther Field.
PSU is now 6-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play, and all but assured a spot in the Little East Conference Tournament, which includes six teams. WCSU, which is ranked 10th in New England, is now 13-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the LEC.
After a scoreless first half, the Colonials came out strong after the break and controlled play. WestConn outshot the hosts 13-5 for the game, including 11-3 after the intermission. The Panther defense held strong, not allowing a goal and keeping junior Nicole Corbin (Clinton, Conn.), the LEC’s co-leading scorer, off the board.
PSU junior Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) was extremely strong in net and finished with nine saves for the shutout, her third of the season. Freshman netminder Ashley Griffin (Newington, Conn.) finished with five saves for the Colonials.
PSU is back in action Tuesday with a non-conference tilt at Brandeis (2:00 p.m.), while Western Connecticut returns home to host Stevens Tech Wednesday (7:00 p.m.). The regular season ends next Saturday with PSU hosting Rhode Island College (2:00 p.m.) and WCSU hosting UMass Boston (7:00 p.m.)
