NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Plymouth State University registered its second straight field hockey victory of the season Saturday, defeating the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 3-0 in the Little East Conference opener for both schools.
Plymouth State outshot the Corsairs 14-4 en route to the win, improving to 2-3 overall. UMD dropped to 0-5 on the season. PSU, three-time defending conference champion, has won 18 consecutive LEC regular-season contests, dating back to 2001.
The Panthers scored a pair of unassisted first-half goals to take control of the game. Sophomore Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.) put PSU on the board less than two minutes into the contest with her team-high third goal of the season, and freshman Melanie Bates (Derry, N.H.) added her second of the year nine minutes later. Junior Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.) added an insurance goal for PSU midway through the second half, scoring for the second straight game with an assist from freshman Shannon Santamaria (Northfield, N.H.).
Plymouth State senior goalkeeper Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.) made four saves to post her second straight shutout. UMD goalies Meagan Apostolec and Kayla Baker combined to make 11 stops.
PSU will look to keep the momentum going next Saturday with a key contest at archrival Keene State (12:00 p.m.). The Owls are the only LEC team to defeat the Panthers in the last four years, winning 3-0 in Keene on Sept. 22, 2001.
