PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A freshman defensive back on the Plymouth State University football team has been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for his performance in a Panther victory last Saturday.
Freshman safety Kynan Mello (Beverly, Mass./North Shore Tech) received Honorable Mention Tuesday on the ECAC Northeast list of weekly honors. He was the only player to receive honorable mention, along with the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
A 5-9, 174-pound back, Mello turned in a stellar performance last Saturday in his first career start. He collected three interceptions, broke up three other passes, made four tackles (three unassisted) and forced a fumble. His efforts helped PSU limit UMass Dartmouth to 277 yards and seven points in a 14-7 PSU victory Saturday at Currier Field.
Mello’s six passes defended (3 INT and 3 breakups) in one game is the most in the nation this season in NCAA Division III. He is now tied for sixth in Division III in passes defended (3.0 per game) and tied for 12th in interceptions (1.5 per game).
The Panthers, 1-1, will look to make it two in a row this Saturday when they host William Paterson at Currier Field (1:00 p.m.)
