PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men’s basketball team received its fifth consecutive post-season berth Monday with an invitation to the 2006 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division III Tournament.
The Panthers, 16-10 overall, received the seventh seed in this year’s tournament and will travel to second-seeded MIT, 20-8, this Wednesday for a first-round game at Rockwell Cage in Cambridge, Mass. (7:00 p.m.) PSU is also visiting the post-season for the ninth time in the last 11 years.
The other first-round games Wednesday include top-seeded Keene State (20-7) hosting eighth-seeded Colby-Sawyer (17-10), sixth-seeded Wheaton (16-10) playing at home against third-seeded Emmanuel (20-7), and fourth-seeded Rhode Island College (17-9) hosting fifth-seeded Coast Guard (17-8). The semifinals and championship will be Friday and Saturday at the sites of the highest remaining seeds.
Plymouth State is making its second straight ECAC appearance and fourth in the last five years, sandwiching in an NCAA Tournament berth in 2004. PSU was upset by Western New England College in the first round of last year’s ECAC tourney. The Panthers finished fourth in the Little East Conference this season with an 8-6 mark, and were knocked out of the LEC Tournament in the first round by UMass Dartmouth.
MIT received the second seed in this year’s ECAC Tournament after finishing second in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference during the regular season with an 8-4 mark, and advancing to the NEWMAC Championship game before losing to WPI. MIT’s only previous ECAC Tournament appearance was in 2003, when it lost to Babson in the first round, 71-63.
PSU is making its 10th appearance in the ECAC Tournament. The previous showings came in 1989, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2005. The Panthers advanced to the championship game in 1994, 1999 and 2002. Plymouth State also participated in the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and 2004.
