NEW LONDON, Conn. – Plymouth State University outshot Mitchell College 68-5 Sunday afternoon, and the Panthers posted a 16-0 non-conference victory over the Pequots in non-conference men’s lacrosse action.
The Panthers took a 4-0 lead after one quarter and extended it to 8-0 by halftime. It was a 13-0 game by the end of the third frame and PSU coasted home with the win. Plymouth State improves to 4-6 overall, while Mitchell is winless in six tries.
PSU junior reserve goaltender Nick Grobe (Winchester, Mass.), making his first start of the season and second career start, recorded his first career shutout with two saves.
The Panthers were able to use the whole bench, with 26 different players seeing the field and 10 players getting into the scoring column. Fifteen of PSU’s 16 goals were scored by freshmen or sophomores. It was also PSU’s second whitewash of the season, as the Panthers blanked New England College last month.
Freshman Jordan Buzzell (West Yarmouth, Mass.) led the Panther output with three goals, the first three of his career. Sophomores John Brule (Northboro, Mass.) and Ryan Silva (Chelmsford, Mass.) added two goals and two assists apiece, and sophomore Pat Young (Bedford, N.H.) and freshman DJ Butler (Brookline, N.H.) also collected two goals. Single goals were scored by senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshmen Luke Metraw (Chelmsford, Mass.), Andrew Ellsmore (Scituate, Mass.), Craig Maheux (Laconia, N.H.) and Jeremy Sweet (Wilmot, N.H.) They were also the first career goals for Ellsmore, Maheux and Sweet.
Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Wednesday with a visit to defending champion Keene State (4:00 p.m.)
