AUBURN, Mass. – Seniors Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) and Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) recorded five-point evenings with two goals and three assists apiece Saturday night as Plymouth State University defeated Worcester State College, 13-3, in ECAC Northeast Conference men’s ice hockey action at Horgan Rink.
Plymouth State won its fourth straight game to improve to 14-8-1 overall and 12-2 in the Northeast. The 14 wins is the most for Plymouth State since the 1993-94 season, and the 13 goals in a game on Saturday was the most since a 13-1 win over Salve Regina on Nov. 21, 1998. PSU has locked up third place in the conference and will have home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season.
Strangely, Worcester State finished with a 50-46 advantage in shots on goal. The Lancers outshot the visitors 18-7 in the first period but it was Plymouth State with the 5-0 lead. PSU put the game away with four more goals in the both the second and third periods, ending the Lancers’ season at 2-20-2 overall and 2-13-0 in the Northeast.
Kane’s five-point evening extended his career totals to 56 goals and 53 assists, moving him up to third on PSU’s all-time goals list and fourth on the all-time points list. His four-year linemate, senior Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) collected three assists on Saturday, improving his career totals to 71 assists and 96 points. He is tied for third on PSU’s career assist list, and tied for seventh on the all-time points list.
Junior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) added to the PSU scoring parade with two goals and two assists, as 10 different Panthers scored goals. Seniors Joey Lee (Manchester, N.H./Central) and Charlie McLeman (Winchester, Mass.) and sophomores Topo LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.) and Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) all found the net for the winners, and senior Ian Gill (Sutton, N.H.), junior Nate Gardner (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and freshman Loren Tennent (Bolton Landing, N.Y.) all tallied their first career goals.
Sophomore Nathan Perreault (Smithfield, R.I.) led the Lancers with a pair of goals, and classmate Ed Achilles (Horsham, Pa.) scored the other WSC goal.
PSU used three goaltenders, with each giving up one goal. Sophomore Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 28 saves in the first 30 minutes to earn the victory, junior Brendan Fahy (Plymouth, Mass.) stopped 13 shots over the next 19 minutes, and senior Franky LeClair (York, Maine) made six saves in the last 11 minutes. WSC goalies Jason Richardson (Perkasie, Pa.) and Rob Montgomery (Springfield, Mass.) combined to make 33 saves.
PSU returns home to host Western New England on Tuesday in the regular season finale at Waterville Valley (6:00 p.m.) The Panthers will also host a first-round play-off game at Waterville Valley on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 6:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
