SALEM, Mass. – Freshman Kat Roland (Norton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) pitched a four-hit shutout in the nightcap Monday evening to lead Plymouth State University to a split of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Salem State College. The host Vikings pulled out a 2-1 extra-inning victory in the opening game, and the Panthers came back to win game two behind Roland, 6-0.
PSU sophomore Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) and SSC sophomore Katelyn Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) were locked in a superb pitchers’ dual in the opener. MacFarland allowed only three hits, no walks and one unearned run through seven innings, striking out eight, while Doherty gave up just two hits, no walks and one run through seven frames with five Ks.
The Panthers got a run in the third inning when junior Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.) tripled and scored on a ground-out by freshman Jenna George (Cumberland, R.I.). The Lady Vikings tied the game in the sixth when senior Jessica daSilva (Revere, Mass.) reached on an error and came home on a double by freshman Jess Baird (Worcester, Mass.)
With the tiebreaker rule in place (a runner placed on second base), PSU couldn’t push a run across in the top of the eighth inning, and senior Ali Carnevale (Salem, Mass.) delivered a one-out double to score freshman Suli Grullon (Salem, Mass.) from second in the bottom of the eighth to win it for the Vikings. MacFarland was tagged with just her second loss in seven decisions this season.
Roland surrendered four singles and a walk and allowed only one runner to reach second base safely in the nightcap, evening her record at 4-4 and registering her second shutout of the season. PSU got the only runs they would need in the second inning when juniors Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I.) and Shauna Isham (Auburn, N.H.) singled and scored on a two-run single by Pettengill. Freshman Sammi Romano (Kingston, N.H./Sanborn Regional) and Isham singled in the fourth inning and came around on a two-run double by George, and PSU added insurance runs in the sixth inning when Roland cracked a one-out double and Isham and George followed with RBI singles.
PSU’s non-conference twinbill Tuesday at Lyndon State College has been cancelled due to snow conditions. The Panthers have moved Wednesday’s non-conference doubleheader against Saint Joseph’s College to Standish, Maine (4:00 p.m.) Salem State will host the University of Southern Maine on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
