PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University had two individual champions and finished in second place out of seven teams Sunday afternoon in the annual PSU Wrestling Invitational held at Foley Gymnasium.
Bridgewater State College won seven of the 10 weight classes in the tournament and cruised to the team title with 138.5 points. PSU was runner-up with 91 points, followed by U.S. Coast Guard Academy (73), Western New England College (60), Morrisville State University (44.5), University of New Hampshire (Club)(12.5), and Springfield College (12).
Freshmen Donny Connolly (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane) and Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) captured individual titles for PSU. Connolly (far left) won all three of his bouts at 165 pounds, including a 15-0 technical fall in the final, and St. Ours (left) went 3-0 at 197, winning the final by forfeit over teammate Dan Burke (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic (Mass.). St. Ours improves to a team-best 15-2 record this season, while Connolly is now 13-7.
Burke was one of three Panthers to finish runner-up in their weight class, joining juniors Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) at 157 and 184, respectively. Third-place finishes were produced by freshman Bobby Murray (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic (Mass.) at 149 and sophomore Bruce Pacy (Rowley, Mass.) at 184, while freshmen Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) and Rob Ludwig (Dracut, Mass.) placed fourth at 125 and 141 pounds respectively.
PSU is back in action on Wednesday with a dual match at Southern Maine (7:00 p.m.), and will compete in the annual New England Dual Meet Championships at Bridgewater State next Sunday, Jan. 21, at 10:00 a.m.
