BRISTOL, R.I. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team split a pair of dual matches Saturday afternoon, falling to the host Roger Williams University, 30-21, but rebounding to defeat Western New England College, 45-3.
PSU completes the first semester with a 1-3 dual match record, while Roger Williams is 8-2 and WNEC 3-7-1.
The Panthers were led by three freshmen who recorded two victories apiece. Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) posted a pin and a decision at 149 pounds, Donny Connolly (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane) registered a pair of wins at 165, and Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) pinned both of his opponents at 184. St. Ours, who is 9-2 on the season, and Connolly, who is 9-4, share the team lead in victories this season.
Junior Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) also won twice for the Panthers, picking up a forfeit victory against RWU and pinning his WNEC opponent and moving to 8-3 on the season.
Other Panther victories in the WNEC match were collected by junior Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 157, sophomore Steve Gaughan (Merrimack, N.H./Manchester Trinity) by fall at 174, and junior Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) at 184.
PSU resumes competition on Saturday, Jan. 6, with a visit to the North-South Duals, hosted by Ursinas (Pa.)
