PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Five Plymouth State University wrestlers finished as place-winners Saturday afternoon and the Panthers took third out of eight teams at the annual PSU Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy took the team title, scoring 82.5 points. Bridgewater State finished runner-up with 76, followed by PSU (71), Morrisville State (68), Southern Maine (54.5), Western New England (53.5), Springfield (44), and the Yale Club (6.5).
Three PSU wrestlers captured the championship in their weight classes. Freshman Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H./Concord HS/Tilton Prep) won the title at 133 pounds, winning all three of his bouts and improving his season record to 13-4. Freshman Devon Hanson (Sanbornton, N.H./Timberlane) captured the championship at 141 pounds with three straight wins, upping his season mark to 8-6. Senior Nick Gurney (Dixfield, Maine) also won three in a row to earn the title at 184 pounds and improve his record to 10-7 on the season.
Two other Panthers finished in the top three in their divisions. Senior Billy Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) advanced to the finals at 197 and finished runnerup, and senior Dean Miller (Long Valley, N.J.) posted a 3-1 record at 149 and ended up in third place.
Plymouth State returns to dual meet action this Wednesday with a home bout against the University of Southern Maine (6:00 p.m.)
