BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 24 points and pulled down 14 boards Tuesday night to lead the Plymouth State University men’s basketball team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 104-66, in a Little East Conference game at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMB campus.
The victory was PSU’s 12th straight over UMass Boston, dating back to 1999. The Panthers have won seven in a row this season to improve to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Beacons fell to 5-8 on the year and 2-2 in LEC games.
Plymouth State scored eight straight points to take a 15-7 advantage five minutes into the game. The Beacons pulled to within five (17-12), but the Panthers went on a blistering 24-7 run, led by eight points from Pope, to take a 41-19 lead. PSU maintained the lead and went into the intermission with a 50-26 advantage. UMass Boston would get no closer than 23 points in the second half as the Panthers cruised to the win.
Plymouth State shot 52.6 percent (40-76) from the floor. Pope added a game-high seven assists, five steals and two blocks to his evening. Senior Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) netted 21 points in just 24 minutes, while junior Brandon Boggs (Strafford, N.H.) dropped in 13 points off the bench.
Freshman Alberto Paniagua (Dorchester, Mass.) led the Beacons with 15 points and five assists. Sophomore Tony Barros (Dorchester, Mass.) ended the night with 12 points, while senior forward Eddie Ramos (Malden, Mass.) contributed with 11 points.
PSU returns home to host UMaine Farmington in a non-conference affair Thursday evening (7:30 p.m.) at Foley Gymnasium, and entertains Western Connecticut on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in an LEC clash.
