Plymouth State University Professor of Music Dr. Daniel Perkins has been appointed music director for the Manchester Choral Society’s 45th season. Perkins appointment was announced following the retirement of Lisa Wolff who directed the MCS for 23 years.
Perkins says “It is such an honor to continue the tradition of excellence established by Lisa Wolff with MCS. I look forward to engaging audiences with new and exciting repertoire and reaching out to area schools and choruses.”
Manchester Choral Society is a large community chorus, with members selected by audition. The choir performs major works with orchestra, sometimes in collaboration with the New Hampshire Symphony and other area choirs.
Robert St. Cyr, a Plymouth State music education major, has accepted an internship as assistant conductor. St. Cyr is student teaching at Pinkerton Academy this fall. A graduate of Manchester Memorial High School, St. Cyr sang with the MCS during high school. His duties with MCS will include conducting sectional rehearsals and participating in the administration of the chorus.
Professor Perkins serves as director of choral activities at Plymouth State University. He holdsDoctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in choral music from the University of Southern California, and Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Brigham Young University. Perkins continued his studies as a Fulbright scholar in Helsinki, Finland. While there, he worked as the associate conductor of the Finnish Chamber Choir and Associate Conductor of the Savonlinna Opera Festival Chorus.
Perkins is active as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States. He has been a guest conductor of the Manchester Choral Society, interim conductor of the Dartmouth Concertato Singers, and is a frequent guest conductor with the Hanover Chamber Orchestra. He served as guest conductor of the Dartmouth Handel Society in 2004, and is music director of the New Hampshire Master Chorale, a newly established regional chamber choir. He conducted the New Hampshire Friendship Chorus on their tours to Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, and he has been invited to return to Vietnam to conduct for the Vietnamese National Opera and Ballet.
Under his direction, the Plymouth State University Chamber Singers have garnered high praise for their performances in the United States, England, South Africa and Italy.
Perkins is also a co-founder, with Dr. Trish Lindberg, of the award-winning Educational Theatre Collaborative, pianist for the Ruggieri Chamber Soloists, and director of music at Plymouth Congregational Church.
