WALTHAM, Mass. – Plymouth State College is in sixth place after one day of competition at the New England Division II-III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Bentley College.
The first nine events were held Friday, with 17 teams competing. UMass Dartmouth was leading with 329 points, followed by Keene State (323), Bentley (306), St. Michael’s (201), Norwich (168) and Plymouth State (165). Rounding out the top ten were Bridgewater State (163), Gordon (139), Eastern Connecticut and Simmons (129 each).
Junior captain Allison Bregy (Camden, Maine) turned in the top performance for PSC, finishing sixth in a pair of individual events and one relay. She placed sixth in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.62, and sixth in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:24.06.
Freshman Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.) also pulled in a sixth-place finish, doing it in the 200 yard backstroke with a season-best time of 2:23.65. Scarborough and Bregy were joined by junior Amy Bernier (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Andrea Boutilier (Chicopee, Mass.) for a sixth place finish in the 400 yard medley relay.
The Panthers had three freshmen compete in the one-meter diving event, with Kristin Kearins (Andover, Mass.) placing ninth with a score of 289.75, Becky Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.) taking 11th (280.50) and Jen Crescenzi (Killingworth, Conn.) finishing 13th (273.95).
Other PSC individuals to score points included Bernier with an 11th place in the 100 fly (1:07.17), sophomore Vanessa Re (West Hartford, Conn.) with an 11th place in the 200 IM (2:33.96) and freshman Stephanie Corbeil (Manchester, NH/Memorial) with a 17th place in the 200 IM (2:49.89).
The championships continue with seven more events Saturday and the final eight events Sunday.
