PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Sebastian Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) came off the bench to score his second goal of the season Saturday at
Panther Field as Plymouth State College defeated Gordon College, 1-0, in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III New England Men’s Soccer Tournament.
With the victory the top-seeded Panthers earned the right to host the championship match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Plymouth against second-seeded
Westfield State College. The Owls battled sixth-seeded Babson College to a scoreless draw on Saturday, but advanced by winning the round of overtime
penalty kicks, 4-2.
After a scoreless first half in which neither team could take control, the deadlock was finally broken by the Rodriguez’ goal in the 67th minute. PSC
junior Rob Ball (Rockaway, N.J.) found Rodriguez, whose shot from the penalty kick spot trickled past Gordon senior keeper Erik Schartner (Libertyville, Ill.)
for the only tally of the game.
Plymouth State finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal. Panther keeper Scott Laine (Spencer, Mass.) made four saves for his sixth shutout of
the season and 11th of his career. Schartner was credited with seven stops.
PSC heads into Sunday’s contest with a 13-6-0 record, while Gordon completes its season at 13-7-3. Westfield State brings a 11-6-2 into the finale.
