PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.) scored two goals Saturday at Arold Field, leading Plymouth State College to a 6-0 victory
over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Little East Conference field hockey opener for both schools.
The win gives the two-time defending LEC champion Panthers a 1-0 conference record, 4-1 overall, while UMD drops to 1-4 and 0-1. PSC had little
trouble with the visitors, outshooting the Corsairs 31-1.
Matteson broke a scoreless tie midway through the first half with her first goal. PSC then got two goals late in the half, each set up by senior Katie
Dodge (Sanbornton, N.H.). Junior Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) notched her second goal of the season with 1:17 remaining and Matteson made
it 3-0 with her second of the game with 36 seconds on the clock.
PSC poured it on in the second half with three more goals. Senior Melanie McAvey (North Grafton, Mass.) and freshman Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.)
each tallied their second goal of the season, and junior defender Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) smacked home her first career goal with 10 minutes
Junior goalkeeper Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) needed to make only one save to record her third shutout of the season. UMD goalkeepers
Meaghan Apostolec (Plymouth, Mass.) and Aimee Aresnian (Rockport, Mass.) combined for 21 saves for the Corsairs.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday (Sept. 24) at Westfield State (4 p.m.). UMD returns home to host Worcester State Tuesday (4:30 p.m.).
