NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Tailback Darrin Davis (Irvington, N.J.) and wide receiver Jeff Cupe (Windsor, Conn.) each scored three touchdowns as Southern Connecticut State University shut out Plymouth State 49-0 Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
Davis, a senior who rushed 31 times for 157 yards, scored three times in the opening half on runs of eight, one and 49 yards.
Cupe caught touchdown passes of 83, 11 and five yards from senior quarterback John Esquivel (Sacramento, Calif.) as the Owls, now 8-2, opened a 42-0 halftime lead. Cupe had six catches for 154 yards while Esquivel completed 17 of 26 attempts for 263 yards.
Freshman Sean Harris (W. Haverstram, N.Y.) scored the only touchdown of the second half for Southern on a 25-yard run.
Southern amassed 611 total yards to 223 for the Panthers, who are winless in nine starts. The Panthers will try to avoid a winless season with a Freedom Football Conference home game next Saturday (Nov. 16) against WPI (1:00 p.m.).
