PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With a 24-19 victory over previously-unbeaten Wilkes University, the Plymouth State College wrestling team captured the
championship of the first annual Wildcat Duals, hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
The Panthers reached the championship match with consecutive victories over MIT (46-4), Coast Guard (25-11) and Sacred Heart (34-6). The four wins
improves Plymouth State’s overall record to 9-2.
PSC senior Ryan Carr (Salem, NH) was selected the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. Carr registered victories in all four of his bouts in the
heavyweight division, and his win in the final match of the day clinched the victory for Plymouth State and handed Wilkes its first loss in 13 matches this season. Carr
leads the team with an 18-5 record this year.
Four Panther wrestlers each won three matches on the day. Senior Russ Pamulak (Indianola, IA) went 3-0 at 184 pounds, including a pin over Wilkes’
Joe Smith in the championship match, and improved his individual record to 15-4. Sophomore Moses Cerritos (Naples, FL) was 3-0 at 174 pounds, upping his
season mark to 7-6.
Sophomore Brent Arbogast (Nashua, NH) won all three of his matches, all in different weight classes. He was victorious at 141 pounds against Coast
Guard, 157 against Sacred Heart, and 149 against Wilkes, improving to 16-4 overall. Senior Todd Oljey (Byfield, MA) was 3-0 in two different weight classes,
winning twice at 149 and once at 157 to better his individual mark to 8-5.
Freshman Dave Brown (North Andover, MA) won both of his encounters at 133 pounds, and freshman Nate Buffington (Plymouth, NH) split his two
matches at 125 pounds.
Plymouth State will host the annual PSC Open next Saturday (Jan. 23), an event that this year will be held in PSC’s Hartman Union Building (10:00 a.m.).
