PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State College clinched its second straight Little East Conference regular season field hockey title Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over
Fitchburg State College at Arold Field.
The triumph gives the Panthers their eighth consecutive victory and third straight shutout, moving them to 11-4 overall and 8-1 in the LEC. Fitchburg State drops to
4-12 overall and 0-9 in conference play.
With the regular season title wrapped up, PSC receives a bye in next Tuesday’s first round of the LEC Tournament. Both LEC semi-final games will be at PSC on
Friday, Oct. 26th (12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.), with the championship game Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Arold Field.
Senior Megan Fournier (East Waterboro, Maine) and junior Melanie McAvey (Grafton, Mass.) led the Panthers against Fitchburg, scoring two goals apiece.
Fournier also picked up an assist, as did seniors Sarah Lynch (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) and Megan Wolfley (Maplewood, N.J.) and junior Katie Dodge (Sanbornton,
N.H.). Fournier put the Panthers on the board 12 minutes into the game, and McAvey scored twice in the opening 35 minutes to make it a 3-0 PSC lead by halftime.
Fournier added her team-leading eighth of the season midway through the second half to put the game away.
Plymouth State finished with a 27-2 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore keepers Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) and Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.) combined
on the shutout for PSC, with Brady making the only save between the two. Sophomore Angela Buffington (Carver, Mass.) made 12 saves for the Falcons before freshman
Kristen Hull (White River Jct., Vt.) came on in the last nine minutes and made one save.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season Saturday at Worcester State (6:00 p.m.). Fitchburg State concludes its season with home games Saturday against
Southern Maine (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday vs. UMaine Farmington (1:00 p.m.)
