CHARLEMONT, Mass. – Plymouth State College wrapped up the regular ski racing season Saturday with the slalom race at the Smith College Winter Carnival at Berkshire East
Mountain in western Massachusetts.
Rival Colby-Sawyer College narrowly edged the PSC men out for first place among the 10 schools in Saturday’s slalom. Colby-Sawyer also edged the Panthers for first place in the
final regular season team rankings, as the teams were tied heading into Saturday’s competition. The Panther women placed seventh among 11 schools in Saturday’s slalom, finishing sixth in
the final regular season team rankings.
Senior Tim Mitchell (Ashland, Mass.) concluded a strong regular season for the Panther men, winning Saturday’s slalom over 80 other skiers and finishing as the top ranked individual
for the season. In 10 races this year (five slalom, five GS), Mitchell finished first six times and runner-up three times. It is also the second straight season that Mitchell has been No. 1 during
the regular season.
PSC had three other men finish in the top 13 on Saturday. Freshman Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) came in fourth place, senior EJ Cheney (Bethel, Maine) was ninth, and
sophomore Brent Grygiel (Windham, Maine) was 13th.
In addition to Mitchell in the final regular season individual men’s rankings, Barlow is eighth, Cheney is ninth, senior Jake Manseau (Henniker, N.H.) is 13th, and sophomore Garrett
Lashar (Kingfield, Maine) and Grygiel are 20th and 21st, respectively.
Sophomore Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was the ninth-place finisher among more than 70- skiers in Saturday’s women’s slalom, completing a strong regular season for the
Panther captain. She finishes runner-up for the individual rankings for the season, having finished in the top 10 in nine straight races.
Freshman Carol McCarthy (East Rochester, N.H.) was the next highest finisher for the PSC women on Saturday, placing 31st. After Swaffield, the next best Panther women in the
regular season rankings were junior Heidi Mann (Merrimack, N.H.) in 29th, and sophomore Erin Reilly (Marion, Conn.) in 31st.
The Panther men have qualified as a team for the Eastern Regional Championships, while Swaffield will represent the PSC women. The Eastern Regionals are next Sunday and
Monday (Feb. 24-25) at Waterville Valley.
