PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Sara Wormwood (Rutland, VT) went 4-for-6 with three home runs and five RBI Tuesday to lead Plymouth State College to a sweep
over UMass Boston, 12-2 and 7-1, in a Little East Conference softball doubleheader at PSC’s D&M Park.
Wormwood cracked home runs in her first two times up, a two-run blast in the first inning that put PSC ahead 2-0, and a solo shot to lead off the third. The Panthers went on to
score 10 runs in that third inning, coasting to the 12-2 victory. Junior Jen Moulton (Bow, NH) allowed only two unearned runs in pitching the complete-game, striking out 10 batters in
five innings and improving her record to 4-4.
In addition to Wormwood, other hitting leaders for PSC in the opener included sophomore Kelly Anderson (Exeter, NH), who went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI,
senior Kerry Bickford (Belmont, NH), who was 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, and sophomore Steph Ruel (Biddeford, ME), who had two singles, a walk and two RBI.
Senior Amanda Murphy (Canton, CT) picked up her first victory (1-5) of the season for PSC in the nightcap, retiring the first 10 batters and limiting the Beacons to four hits and a
run in seven innings of work. The Panthers got all the runs they would need in the first two innings, plating five in the first and two in the second. Freshman Emily Ayres (Canaan, NH)
had a three-run triple in the first inning, and Wormwood smashed her third home run of the day, a two-run dinger, in the second frame.
The lone UMB highlights came from freshman Christina Palombo (Watertown, CT), who singled twice and scored in the first game, and then doubled and scored on an Angela
Hogrell (Quincy, MA) single in the nightcap. Hogrell pitched both games for the Beacons, and was saddled with the losses.
