PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State College women’s swimming and diving team placed first in nine of the 14 individual events Tuesday and defeated St. Michael’s College, 163-134, at the P.E. Center Pool.
The victory is PSC’s third straight this month and fourth straight overall, as the Panthers improve to 6-2 on the season. St. Michael’s returns to Vermont with a 1-5 record.
The Panther swimmers were led by junior Meaghan Buckley (Haverhill, MA), who won three individual events and one relay. She captured 50-yard freestyle in 25.87 seconds, the 100-yard free in 56.49 seconds and the 200-yard free in 2:02.54, and she was on the fastest 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Three other Panthers were double winners in the meet. Senior captain Christa Smith (North Yarmouth, ME) finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle in a season-best 11:52.44, and the 500-yard free in 5:42.35. Freshman Allison Bregy (Camden, ME) won the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.16) as well as the 100-yard bresatstroke (1:18.30). Sophomore Sarah Lagasse (Haverhill, MA) won her first swimming event of the season with a first place in the 50-yard breaststroke (37.12), and won the one-meter optional diving event (157.10), but was defeated in the one-meter voluntary diving, only her second loss in 18 diving events this season.
The Knights got a strong performance from senior captain Tracie Grant (Andover, MA), who won three of SMC’s four individual events. She took the 50-yard backstroke (30.94), the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.21) and the 50-yard butterfly (30.63). Sophomore Erin Stinchfield (Darien, CT) was the winner in the one-meter voluntary diving.
The Panthers have their final home meet of the season this Saturday (Jan. 30) against Western Connecticut (1:00 p.m.) at the PSC Natatorium in the P.E. Center. The remaining schedule for Plymouth State includes the last dual meet on Wednesday (Feb. 3) at Keene State (6:00 p.m.), and the Division III New England Championships on Friday-Sunday (Feb. 19-21) at Bowdoin College.
