WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Plymouth State College gave Fitchburg State College all it could handle Saturday night, but the Falcons skated away with a 4-2 ECAC Northeast
Conference ice hockey victory at the Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
PSC trailed by only one goal most of the third period, but Fitchburg clinched the victory with an empty net goal with one second to play.
The Falcons got goals from four different players. Junior Jeff DuRoss (Weymouth, MA) notched a short-handed goal, with an assist from Kevin Lizotte (Fitchburg, MA), for the only
goal of the opening period, and freshman Jeff Brodeur (Townsend, MA) gave FSC a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Freshman Bob Rumley (Billerica, MA) gave the Falcons a 3-1
lead late in the second period and senior Kevin Lizotte (Fitchburg, MA) iced the game with the empty-netter.
Both of Plymouth State’s goals were scored by the line of seniors Todd Hengstenberg (Clark, NJ) and Josh Perry (Falmouth, MA) and freshman Dave Moore (Anchorage, AK).
Moore’s goal (from Hengstenberg and Perry) at 2:19 of the second period cut FSC’s lead to 2-1, and Hengstenberg’s marker (form Moore and Perry) at 4:17 of the third again cut the
Falcons lead to a goal at 3-2.
Plymouth State freshman goalie Larry Forgue (Nashua, NH) made 31 saves, while Fitchburg State junior Nick Gangemi (Tewksbury, MA) made 17 saves.
Fitchburg State moves into a tie for third place in the ECAC Northeast with a 10-1-2 record, 13-5-3 overall, while Plymouth State remains in seventh place in the Northeast with a
9-5-0 mark, 12-9-0 overall. Eight of the 18 teams in the Northeast will make the play-offs, with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Plymouth State is off until hosting Worcester State next Saturday (Feb. 20) at Waterville Valley (7:00 p.m.), while Fitchburg returns to action Tuesday (Feb. 16) at Suffolk (6:00 p.m.).
