PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Springfield College scored two unanswered goals in a 10-minute span in the second half Sunday and went on to post a 2-1 victory
over Plymouth State College on the second day of the Best Inn Men’s Soccer Kick-Off Classic, hosted by PSC at Panther Field.
The outcome left both teams with a 1-1 record on the season. Springfield had lost to Norwich in overtime in Saturday’s opener, while PSC came from
behind to defeat Oswego State.
Freshman Evan Johnson (Northford, Ct.) opened the scoring for Springfield by blasting home a penalty kick past Plymouth State keeper Brad Wilby
(Haddonfield, N.J.) in the 50th minute. Springfield notched its second goal on a nice outside move by sophomore Mike Fregosi (Carmel, NY) nine minutes later.
PSC fought back, notching a goal by senior Rob Ball (Rockaway, MA) on a nice header off a throw-in from freshman Brad Wyman (Manchester, N.H.)
and a flick header from senior Jake Morley (Southampton, UK) with 13 minutes remaining.
Wilby was solid in goal, finishing with two saves. Sophomore Tom Bowden (Havertown, PA) combined with freshman Steve Paige (East
Longmeadow, MA) on a solid performance for the Pride.
The Panthers will next face non-conference foe Salem State next Saturday (Sept. 14) at Panther Field (3 p.m.). The Pride return home to face Keene
State Wednesday at 4 p.m.
