SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) scored four goals and sophomores Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) and Erin Smith (West Springfield, Mass.) added two goals each Thursday night to lead the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team to a 9-7 win over Plymouth State College in its home opener on Benedum Field.
It was a 1-1 game at halftime, but Springfield erupted for eight second-half goals for the win. After the teams traded two goals each to start the second half and PSC took a 4-3 lead with 16:30 to play, the Pride rattled off five unanswered goals over the next six minutes and held off the Panthers down the stretch.
Carmody and Smith scored twice each for the Pride during the key rally. Freshman Lauren Keith (Blauvelt, N.Y.) also scored once for Springfield (2-2).
PSC junior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) led the Panthers with three points, assisting on senior Jill Matteson’s (Chatham, Mass.) first-half goal and adding two of her own after the break. Freshman Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) and sophomore Annmarie Guglielmo (Gansevoort, N.Y.) also scored second-half goals for the Panthers.
Junior goalie Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) was credited with five saves for PSC, while Springfield’s Emily Boosahda (Bass River, Mass.) made nine saves.
The Panthers, 3-2, are back in action Monday, Mar. 31, with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Gordon College.
