HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior forward Brett MacQuarrie (Cohasset, Mass.) and freshman forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) each scored a goal in the
first half Wednesday to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 shutout win over the visiting Plymouth State College Panthers in the first round of the ECAC Division III
Men’s Soccer Tournament.
Trinity, seeded third in the eight-team tourney, improves to 12-3 with its eighth straight win. The sixth-seeded Panthers finish the season at 12-9.
Neither team recorded a shot on goal for the first 8:30 of the game before Trinity junior midfielder Caley Iandorio (Wayland, Mass.) narrowly missed wide left on a
free kick. Sandell scored the first goal on a header into the left corner of the goal in the 17th minute. Iandorio assisted on the play off a corner kick.
MacQuarrie scored for Trinity with 10:19 remaining in the first half, from sophomore forward Peter Zoppi (Cheshire, Conn.).
The score did not change through the second half, although Plymouth outshot Trinity, 7-5, in the period. The Bantams had 10 shots in the game, while Plymouth
totaled nine. Trinity junior goalkeeper Tom Hambrick-Stowe (Lancaster, Pa.) made three saves to record his eighth shutout of the season. Freshman Brad Wilby
(Haddonfield, NJ) made three saves for the Panthers.
Trinity will face #2 Amherst College in the semi-finals Saturday at #1 Middlebury College. In other first round finals, Middlebury defeated #8 Gordon, 6-0, Amherst
knocked off #7 Wheaton, 3-0, and #5 Tufts upset #4 Bates, 3-1.
