PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State College earned its second straight softball post-season berth Monday when the Panthers were selected to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division III Tournament.
PSC received the second seed in the eight-team field, and will host seventh-seeded Norwich University Wednesday (May 7) at 4:30 p.m. in a single elimination game at D & M Park. The winner of Wednesday’s game will advance to a double-elimination event this weekend (May 10-11) at the site of the highest remaining seed. All tournament games at PSC are free admission.
The rest of Wednesday’s first-round ECAC games include #8 Suffolk at #1 Springfield, #6 Eastern Connecticut at #3 Coast Guard, and #5 Southern Maine at #4 Rhode Island College.
Plymouth State was selected to the ECAC Tournament after posting a 25-8 overall record, setting a school record for victories for the second year in a row. The Panthers tied for third in the Little East Conference during the regular season with a 9-5 record, and finished third in the LEC Tournament. PSC was eliminated from the conference tournament with back-to-back 1-0, 10-inning losses.
Norwich will arrive with a 28-7 overall record after establishing a school record for wins in a season. The Cadets were the third seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament, and finished runner-up after falling to Western New England College in the championship game.
The Panthers, led by third-year head coach Harry Blood, are playing in the ECAC Tournament for the fifth time in school history. PSC captured the ECAC North championship in its first appearance in 1985, and also made tournament appearances in 1992, 1994 and 2002. The Panthers were eliminated in the first round last season by Fitchburg State, 3-2.
