FORT MYERS, Florida – The Plymouth State College baseball team opened the 2000 campaign Sunday with a pair of victories in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Panthers opened up with an 8-7 victory over Augsburg (Minn.), and followed that up with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over St. Thomas (Minn.). PSC, 2-0, will play nine
games this week in the tournament, finishing up Friday morning against Middlebury.
In the opening contest against Augsburg, PSC took a 7-1 lead in the fifth inning but had to hold on for the win. Freshman Matt Tupman (Concord, NH) led the Panther attack with
a second inning double that drove in two runs. Sophomore right-hander Jeff Morgan (Laconia, NH) allowed four runs in six innings, picking up the victory (1-0).
Plymouth State needed four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game to pull out the win. Trailing 6-3, PSC scored three times to tie the game, and then
freshman Dan Silva (Berlin, Conn.) knocked a bases-loaded single to right to score senior captain Corey Mastin (Newmarket, NH) with the winning run.
Mastin finished the game going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Jay Zinis (Manchester, NH/West) picked up the win in relief (1-0).
