BRISTOL, R.I. – Six Plymouth State College wrestlers placed in the top four in their weight classes Sunday as the Panthers placed fourth out of eight
schools in the 1st Annual Mid-Winter Classic, hosted by Roger Williams University.
The host RWU Hawks captured the event with 102.5 points, with the Brown University JV squad placing second with 97.5. Coast Guard finished third
with 93.5, followed by PSC (63), the University of New Hampshire (50.5), Gettysburg College (42), Northeastern University (14.5), and Springfield Tech (11.5).
Senior Shaun Cleary (West Keansburg, N.J.) led the Panthers, capturing the title in the 141-pound weight class. Cleary won all four of his bouts,
improving his season record to 22-2. In four tournaments this season, Cleary has two first places, one second and one third.
Three Panthers placed third in their respective brackets. Sophomore Micah Canestaro (Wakefield, Mass.) lost his first match at 141pounds, but
earned decisions in four straight bouts to finish third. Two of his decisions were medical forfeits, as Canestaro improved his season record to 11-8. Junior Rich
Moskowitz (Amherst, N.H.) also dropped his first match but rebounded with four straight victories to place third at 157 pounds. Moskowitz is now 14-4 this
season. Junior Rick Simula (Plymouth, N.H.) placed third in the heavyweight division, posting a 3-1 record with two pins. Simula is now 13-6 this season.
Junior Charlie Kenna (Concord, N.H.) and sophomore Taylor Kruse (Sudbury, Mass.) placed fourth in their weight classes. Kenna won two of his first
three bouts at 133 pounds before defaulting with an injury, and Kruse went 2-2 at 174 pounds to finish fourth.
Plymouth State will host the annual PSC Invitational this Saturday at Foley Gymnasium (10:00 a.m.).
