PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A member of the Plymouth State College football team was honored by the Freedom Football Conference Monday for his efforts in last Saturday’s 16-7 win over Salve Regina University.
Sophomore quarterback Justin Connors (Andover, Mass.) was named FFC Rookie of the Week after his debut performance. The 6’6”, 235-pound signal-caller completed 10-of-22 passes for 175 yards, with no interceptions and one touchdown. Connors showed the ability to make the big play, hitting TE John Andrewes (Gloucester, Mass.) on a 57-yard completion and connecting with WR Charlie Schubert (Manchester, NH) on a 56-yard touchdown pass.
The victory over Salve Regina was sweet revenge for the Panther players. The Seahawks handed PSC a 36-6 defeat last fall in the ECAC Northeast Championship game.
Saturday’s victory also made a winner out of Panther coach Chris Rorke in his head coaching debut. The verdict impressed the voters in the ECAC New England Division III poll, who ranked Plymouth State No. 1 in the first poll of the season (released Monday). Williams (0-0) was ranked #2, followed by Bridgewater State (1-0), Western Connecticut (1-0), Springfield (0-1), Wesleyan (0-0), Amherst (0-0), Salve Regina (0-1), Tufts (0-0), and WPI (1-0).
The Panthers, 1-0, continue non-conference competition this Saturday with the first road trip of the season, a 1:30 p.m. contest at Brockport State in western New York. PSC has split with Brockport the last two seasons, each team winning on its home field.
