PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A Plymouth State College women’s lacrosse player has earned honorable mention on the first list of New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance weekly honors.
Senior Erin Fitzgerald (Mansfield, CT) was honored by NEWLA after she helped PSC defeat Eastern Connecticut, 14-8, in the season opener last Thursday. The game was originally scheduled for Plymouth, NH, but was moved to ECSU due to wet field conditions, allowing Fitzgerald to perform before her hometown fans.
Fitzgerald, a four-year veteran for the Panthers, anchored a PSC defense that held the Warriors to their lowest goal total in the last 12 regular season games, dating back to last season (when PSC defeated ECSU 11-5). PSC’s defense, in fact, limited ECSU’s top two all-time leading scorers, Erin Byrnes and Sarah Romano, to a combined three goals in the game. Two PSC freshmen, meanwhile, Janet Conner (South Freeport, ME) and Robin Hartman (Reistertown, MD), scored four goals apiece in their collegiate debuts.
With last week’s home opener wiped out, the Panthers are now slated to make their Arold Field debut Tuesday (Apr. 6) in the first official NEWLA game against New England College (3:30 p.m.). PSC and NEC shared the NEWLA Northern Division title last season. The Pilgrims upended the Panthers in the NEWLA semi-finals, 11-9, and defeated Eastern Connecticut 15-10 to capture the leagues first championship.
The Panthers are in Year One under new coach Abby Burbank, and Year Two of NEWLA. PSC finished 9-7 overall last season.
