PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The final Division III post-season football awards for 2000 have been announced, and five players from Plymouth State College have been recognized by receiving regional All-Star honors.
All five Panthers were selected to the 2000 Football Gazette Division III East Region All-Star Team, and one player, junior LB Chris Kelliher (Goffstown, N.H.), was named to the ECAC Northeast All-Star First Team. Kelliher was a Second Team All-East pick by the Football Gazette, along with junior TE John Walters (Wells, Maine) and junior OL Chad Zibolis (Nashua, N.H.), while senior OL Chris Belmont (Campton, N.H.) and senior DB Jason Marcell (Stoughton, Mass.) were First Team choices.
The honors for the Panthers come on the heels of the Freedom Football Conference All-Star Team announced in November. Belmont and Kelliher were All-FFC First Team picks, and Marcell and Zibolis were Second Team selections.
Kelliher and Marcell anchored the Panther defense in 2000. Kelliher led PSC and ranked second in FFC in tackles (109), fourth in tackles for loss (12), and fourth in fumbles forced and recovered (4). Marcell came on strong toward the end of the season, finishing third on the team in tackles (61) from his safety position while collecting two interceptions, one fumble recovery, three forced fumbles and six pass break-ups.
Belmont, a starter at center, and Zibolis, a starting tackle, were the anchors to an offensive line that was plagued with injuries. They helped PSC tie for third in the conference in total offense with 315 yards a game. Walters finished the season as PSC’s leading receiver (27 rec., 371 yds., 3 TDs) and one of the top pass catchers in the FFC, ranking eighth in receiving yards (37.1/game) and ninth in receptions (2.7/game).
The Panthers completed the 2000 campaign with a 5-5 overall record under second-year head coach Chris Rorke. PSC finished in a three-way tied for third in the FFC (with Norwich and Kings Point), all at 3-3.
