PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three Plymouth State College running backs combined for 308 rushing yards and three touchdowns Saturday as Plymouth State College registered a 42-19 Freedom Football Conference victory over the Coast Guard Academy at PSC’s Currier Field.
Senior Russ Massahos (Windham, N.H.) carried 31 times for 150 yards and one touchdown to lead the way. Junior Mike Bicchieri (Londonderry, N.H.) added 99 yards and one TD on 19 carries, and junior Jason Bordas (Elmore, Vt.) contributed 59 yards rushing and one TD along with a 42-yard TD reception.
The victory improves Plymouth State to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the FFC, while Coast Guard drops to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Massahos went over the 3,000 yard mark in career rushing, improving his career total to 3,123 yards. He is the second PSC player and 22nd Division III back in New England history to reach the milestone. Massahos also concluded a terrific career against Coast Guard, finishing with 108 carries for 754 yards (7.0 avg.) and 10 touchdowns in four games.
Plymouth State dominated the game, piling up 490 total yards while limiting the Bears to 114 yards. PSC had the ball for nearly 40 of the game’s 60 minutes, running 86 plays to Coast Guard’s 42.
The Panthers led 6-0 after one quarter, scoring on its opening possession with a one-yard sneak by sophomore QB Ryan Diamond (Plymouth, N.H.).
The two teams combined for four touchdowns in less than two minutes in the second quarter. Bordas and senior WR Shaun Spaulding (Everett, Mass.) scored for PSC 62 seconds apart to put the Panthers up 18-0, Bordas on a 15-yard run and Spaulding on a 15-yard reception from Diamond.
Coast Guard cut PSC’s lead to 18-13 in the next minute with a pair of TDs, one from special teams from one from the defense. Junior Steve Tillery (Boothwyn, Pa.) returned a kick-off 89 yards for a score, and senior James Corbett (Middletown, Md.) brought back an interception 28 yards for six points. The Bears kept it a three-point game by stopping PSC in the final minute of the half on fourth-and-one at the Coast Guard four yard line.
The Bears took a brief 19-18 lead on their first possession of the third quarter when freshman Joe Tillman (Montoursville, Pa.) scored a one-yard TD, but it was the Panthers the rest of the way. Bicchieri gave PSC the lead back with a six-yard TD run, and Bordas caught the 42-yarder from Diamond late in the third quarter. Sophomore Eric Calderwood (Merrimac, Mass.) contributed a 26-yard field goal, and Massahos rounded out the scoring with a 15-yard TD run in the final minute.
PSC wraps up the season with a pair of road games – a non-conference encounter next Saturday (Nov. 3) at Mount Ida (1 p.m.) and an FFC contest in two weeks (Nov. 10) at WPI (1 p.m.). Coast Guard returns home for its final two games against WPI (1 p.m.) and Kings Point (1 p.m.).
