PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Steph Ruel (Biddeford, Maine) singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to give Plymouth State College a 2-1 victory over
Bates College in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader.
The Bobcats rebounded with a five-run sixth inning of the nightcap to post a 6-3 come-from-behind victory and earn a split of the twinbill.
PSC scored first in the fourth inning of the opener on senior Sara Wormwood’s (Rutland, VT) third home run of the season. The Bobcats evened the game in the fifth inning on
an RBI single by Brooke Tardiff (Wells, Maine), which set up Ruel’s heroics. Senior Jen Moulton (Bow, NH) went the distance for PSC to improve her pitching record to 4-2, while Bates’
Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, NH) was the tough-luck loser to fall to 0-3.
The Panthers held a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning of Game Two, thanks to pair of RBI singles by freshman Sara Morin (Litchfield, NH). But the Bobcats crossed the plate five
times in the sixth inning, getting six hits of PSC relievers Lyndsy Patten (Ellsworth, Maine) and Moulton. RBI singles were produced by Kim Bosse (Auburn, Maine), Tardiff, Whitney
Hamill (Watertown, Conn.) and Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) before Moulton could stop the bleeding.
PSC, 8-8, plays a make-up doubleheader Thursday at New Hampshire College (2:30 p.m.), while Bates, 2-4, is idle until Saturday, Apr. 15, against Maine-Presque Isle (noon).
