CASTLETON, Vt. – Plymouth State College brought home a pair of non-conference baseball victories from Castleton State College Sunday, defeating the Spartans 12-6 and 7-6.
Plymouth State trailed 4-2 in the sixth inning of the opener before rallying for three runs in the sixth inning and piling on seven runs in the seventh inning. The Spartans also had the tying run in scoring position with one out in the seventh inning of the nightcap before a PSC double play ended the game and gave the Panthers the doubleheader sweep.
Junior Jon Rich (Londonderry, N.H.) went six innings in the opener for PSC to pick up the victory and improve his record to 2-1. Freshman Dan Dixon (Limington, Maine) worked five innings for the Panthers in the nightcap to register the win, also upping his record to 2-1.
Freshman Matt Gabellieri (Lincoln, R.I.) and junior Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./West) led the Panther offense in the opener. Gabellieri had two run-scoring hits, including a two-run double in the big seventh inning, and Zinis drove in three runs, two on a first-inning single. Sophomore Shawn Manfredo (Bath, Maine) also smacked a seventh-inning, two-run double.
Junior Sy Tebbetts (Hollis, N.H.) led the Panther bats in the nightcap, recording a pair of RBI singles. Zinis drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and junior Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) hit a three-run home run, his fifth round-tripper of the season.
PSC, 10-13-1 overall, returns home to play consecutive non-conference games at Panther Park Wednesday and Thursday against Dartmouth College (3 p.m.) and Saint Joseph’s College (3 p.m.), respectively. Castleton State drops to 12-9.
