PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State College got a pair of strong, complete-game pitching performances Saturday at Panther Field, and swept a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from Rhode Island College.
Senior Ben DuBois (Franklin, NH) hurled a six-hit shutout in the opener as PSC captured a 5-0 victory, and freshman Jeff Morgan (Laconia, NH) allowed seven hits and four runs in a complete-game effort as PSC took the nightcap, 7-4.
DuBois struck out four and walked two, improving his record to 3-2 and lowering his ERA to 1.18. Morgan fanned four and improved to 3-1, matching DuBois for the team lead in victories.
PSC got the only run it would need in the first game when Todd Steffanides (Fitchburg, MA) cracked a first-inning double and scored on a Mike Bence (Warwick, RI) double. Bence gave PSC a two-run cushion in the sixth with his second home run of the season, and the Panthers plated three more runs in the seventh on a bases-loaded triple by Corey Mastin (Newmarket, NH).
Sophomore Jay Olson (Rumford, RI) went the distance for RIC in the opener, and took the loss (0-6).
PSC took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap on a first-inning RBI single by Bence and a second-inning RBI single by George Gauthier (Rochester, NH). The Anchormen battled back and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by Ben Libbey (Cranston, RI).
The Panthers regained the lead for good with two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, all five knocked in by Dakota Smith (Rochester, NH). The sophomore centerfielder, who walked his first two times up, drove in a pair with a fifth-inning single and brought in three more with his first home run of the season in the sixth.
Dan Williams (Lincoln, RI) knocked in a run for RIC in the ninth, but it was too little, too late.
PSC, 11-10-1 overall and 3-3 in the LEC, gets back into action Sunday (Apr. 18) with a non-league game at St. Joseph’s (11:00 a.m.). RIC, 5-16 and 1-6, returns home to host Wentworth Monday (Apr. 19).
