PLYMOUTH, N.H. – In the opening races of the season, the Plymouth State College skiing teams both took first place in the slalom at Berkshire East Mountain in Western Massachusetts.
The PSC men had four of the top eight finishers to finish first overall. Boston College finished second, followed by UMass, Brown, Colby-Sawyer, Smith, Babson, St. Anselm, UConn, MIT and New England College.
Leading the way for the Panther men was junior Tim Mitchell (Ashland, Mass.), who brought home first place in the combined two-run time. He got solid support from junior EJ Cheney (Bethel, Maine), who placed fifth, sophomore Justin Parent (Sanbornville, NH), who was sixth, and senior Jake Manseau (Henniker, N.H.), who finished eighth.
Rounding out the Panther men were senior Fred DeBaets (St. Sauveur, QUE) in 12th and senior Ryan Hulslander (Merrimack, N.H.) in 16th.
PSC finished ahead of runner-up Colby-Sawyer in the women’s race, followed by Boston College, UMass, New England College, Brown, Babson, St. Anselm, UConn and MIT.
Pacing the women’s field was PSC senior Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania), who captured first place by over six seconds. It was Curuta’s amazing 22nd regular season victory in her 29 career races.
Also helping PSC to the women’s team victory was sophomore Cher Murphy (East Northport, NY), who finished third. Freshman Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) took 15th, senior Tara Eretzian (Turner, Maine) placed 26th, and freshman Erin Reilly (Marion, Conn.) was 27th.
The competition concludes Sunday (Jan. 21) at Berkshire East with the men’s and women’s giant slalom.
