PLYMOUTH, NH — The Plymouth State College baseball team opens its Little East Conference schedule this Saturday in Willimantic, Conn., against defending LEC and NCAA Division III National Champion Eastern Connecticut State University. The teams will play a double-header with the first game set to start at 12:00 p.m.
Plymouth State, 4-6-1 overall, opened its young season last week by posting a 4-5 record in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The Panthers opened the round-robin tournament with a 2-1 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater. PSC also beat Coe College (7-4), Cornell College (3-1) and Colby College (8-7). The team lost three games by just one run, falling to Upper Iowa twice (1-2, 12-13) and dropping a game to Cornell (2-3).
Senior pitcher Ben DuBois (Franklin, NH) has already enjoyed much success, registering two wins in Florida. The teams number one starter threw two complete games (14 innings) while striking out 14 and not allowing any earned runs. He also has a .343 batting average and a team-high eight RBI.
Senior outfielder Mike Bence (Warwick, RI) is off to a good start offensively. The senior leads the team with a .538 average and has five doubles in the nine games in Florida. He also walked seven times and scored five runs for the Panthers.
PSC takes a 4-6-1 overall record to ECSU. The Panthers played St. Anselm’s College to a 1-1 tie in 12 innings Wednesday, in the team’s first New England action, then dropped a 9-8 ninth-inning decision to Colby-Sawyer College Thursday. PSC is slated to open its home schedule on Tuesday (Apr. 6) at Panther Field against Castleton State (3:00 p.m.)
